Drum capacity varies from 7kg-13kg so it is important to have an idea about which size drum you need. If you have a small to medium sized household we recommend between 7-9kg. If you have a larger family we would suggest between 10-13kg.
It is important also to not overfill your machine, just because there’s space inside the drum that does not mean you should fill it. In fact, it is better to leave space to allow the clothes to move freely around the drum ensuring that the detergent is mixed in with the garments inside.
Spin speed is the next consideration after capacity. Spin speed is measures in rpm. The higher the spin speed the more moisture that is removed from the garments inside. Spin speeds vary between 1200rpm and 1600rpm.
There’s also a number of program options when it comes to washing machines. Which additional programs you use depends on your lifestyle – look out for quick wash options as well as intense cycles for soiled sports wear.
With changeable British weather it is hard to comprehend life without a tumble dryer. Much like washing machines, tumble dryer capacity varies. The smallest machines of around 3kg are ideal for drying small items or for small loads. For a family of two or more people we would recommend between 6-7kg. Largest capacity models are available with sizes up to 9kg.
The next decision you need to make is what type of tumble dryer is best suited for you.
Heat pump tumble dryers are the most energy efficient and work by recycling hot air created inside. Whilst these are more energy efficient clothes can take a little longer to dry.
Condenser dryers remove moisture from the clothes which is then drained in to a removable tank which requires emptying. This is a great option if your tumble dryer is located in an area where externally venting it is not an option.
Vented dryers are the most traditional, these work by removing the moisture and expelling it outside through a vent.
Washer dryers offer you the best of both worlds in that you will only need to invest in one appliance however, it is worth bearing in mind that your drying capacity is typically half the level of your washing capacity so may not be ideal depending on your laundry routine. Washer dryers are great for smaller families and for those who are limited for budget or limited for space. They are great for apartments for example where a tumble dryer is often an luxury.
The basics surrounding each function of the appliance are primarily the same as a standard washing machine and tumble dryer but with a reduced number of programs. Capacities that are available are usually up to 10kg for a wash load which then offer either a 5-6kg dry load.
Due to the appliance offering the tumble dryer option the appliance is likely to display a lower energy rating than what you may see on a standard washing machine, this is because tumble dryers are less energy efficient due to the nature of the product.
